Southern California Nature Nonprofits

Beneath the freeways and the sprawl, Southern California is a genuine global biodiversity hotspot, one of only a handful in North America. Its Mediterranean climate gives rise to chaparral and coastal sage scrub found almost nowhere else, and to a stunning concentration of species living in the narrowing gaps between development. Offshore, the Channel Islands hold their own endemic world, a Galapagos in miniature.

The conservation groups here work under relentless pressure, and that sharpens them. They stitch wildlife corridors across highways so mountain lions and bobcats can move, protect the last coastal wetlands, and defend the scrublands and canyons that make this one of the richest ecosystems in the country. Their work is a race, and every acre held is a victory.
