The Pacific Northwest is water made visible, in rivers and rain, in glaciers and the gray reach of the North Pacific. From the outer coast to the crest of the Cascades, this is a country of towering conifers, deep fjords, and rivers that once ran black with salmon. Few landscapes in North America hold so much biomass or move so much water, and few have shaped a regional identity so thoroughly around the wild.
The groups working here carry a long tradition of forest and river defense. They protect old-growth stands and the wildlife that needs them, remove dams and reopen salmon rivers, and steward estuaries where fresh water meets the sea. Their work insists that the region’s prosperity has always flowed from intact ecosystems, not around them.
