The Klamath-Siskiyou is one of the most botanically extraordinary places on Earth, a jumbled knot of mountains where the Cascades, the Coast Range, and the Sierra all seem to collide. Its geology is a chaos of serpentine and ancient seabed, and out of that chaos came an astonishing diversity of conifers, more species than almost anywhere in the world, alongside rivers that once carried some of the greatest salmon runs on the Pacific coast.
The organizations here defend the old forests and roadless wildlands, and they have led the fight to free the Klamath River, whose dam removals rank among the largest river restoration efforts ever attempted. This is a bioregion that rewards anyone willing to look closely, and it has fierce defenders.
