The Central Valley is California’s quiet workhorse, a four-hundred-mile trough of astonishing fertility that feeds much of the nation and, in doing so, gave up almost all of what it once was. Beneath the orchards and row crops lie the ghosts of vast wetlands, tule marshes, and vernal pools that filled each winter and drew millions of birds along the Pacific Flyway. What remains of that older valley survives in fragments, and those fragments are extraordinary.
The organizations here work at the hard seam where agriculture, water, and wildlife meet. They restore vernal pools and remnant wetlands, defend the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the salmon that pass through it, and fight to keep flyway habitat alive across a landscape engineered for production. This is conservation as negotiation, proof that ecology and economy can share the same ground.
