John Muir called it the Range of Light, and the Sierra Nevada earns the name a single great fault-block of granite four hundred miles long, crowned with peaks and softened with meadows, holding the giant sequoias, the largest living things on Earth. The range is also California’s water tower, its snowpack feeding the rivers and reservoirs that sustain much of the state. As the climate warms, that snowpack and the forests around it are changing fast.
The groups working here protect the ancient sequoia groves, restore forests to health so they can survive fire rather than be consumed by it, and safeguard the meadows and rivers that store and release the region’s water. Their work bridges the sublime and the practical, defending both a wonder and a lifeline.
