San Francisco Bay Area Nature Nonprofits

The Bay Area holds one of the most improbable conservation stories in America: a great tidal estuary ringed by seven million people, and yet still alive with harbor seals, migrating shorebirds, and endangered species found nowhere else on Earth. The bay itself is the heart of it, a drowned river mouth of tidal marsh and mudflat, and around it rise the coastal hills, redwood canyons, and grasslands that generations of residents fought to keep from the pavement.

Organizations here pioneered the modern open-space movement, and they keep pushing it forward. They restore tidal marsh at the bay’s edge, knit together wildlife corridors across a fractured urban landscape, and protect the ridgelines and watersheds that give this region its character. It is a living argument that a great city and a wild estuary can rise together.
