Puget Sound Nature Nonprofits

Puget Sound is an inland sea, a deep and intricate network of channels and inlets carved by glaciers and fed by rivers running off the Olympics and Cascades. It is the marine heart of the Northwest, home to the southern resident orcas, to Chinook salmon, and to a densely settled shoreline where a great metropolis meets a fragile estuary. The fate of the orca and the salmon it eats has become the measure of this whole ecosystem.

The organizations here restore nearshore habitat and river estuaries, recover the salmon runs the orcas depend on, and defend the sound against the pressures of growth. Their work ties the region’s future to the survival of its most iconic wildlife an ecosystem seen through the eye of a whale.
