Here the continent’s edge turns rugged and remote, a coast of towering redwoods, hidden rivers, and a shoreline so steep that highways gave up and turned inland, leaving the Lost Coast to the fog. The cold California Current drives a fabulously productive sea, while inland the tallest trees on Earth climb out of river valleys the Eel and the Mattole and the Smith cut through the fog forest.
The organizations of this coast defend some of the last unprotected ancient redwoods, restore salmon and steelhead rivers battered by a century of logging, and work with rural communities to keep working lands whole. This is quiet, dogged, place-rooted conservation, the kind that measures success in generations of trees.
