The Columbia Plateau is a land written by fire and flood a vast plain of ancient basalt lava, scoured into channeled scablands by ice-age megafloods of almost inconceivable force. Across it stretches the shrub-steppe, a dry country of sagebrush and bunchgrass that looks austere but teems with specialized life, all of it drained by the mighty Columbia River as it swings toward the sea.
The organizations here protect the remaining shrub-steppe from conversion, restore the Columbia and its tributaries and the salmon that run them, and safeguard the sagebrush wildlife of this overlooked interior country. Their work reveals a landscape of deep geological drama and quiet ecological richness.
