The Willamette Valley is Oregon’s fertile heart, a broad river plain cradled between the Coast Range and the Cascades where most of the state’s people live and farm. Before settlement it was a rare landscape of oak savanna, wet prairie, and camas meadows, kept open for millennia by Indigenous fire. Today those habitats are among the most endangered in the Northwest, surviving in scattered remnants amid vineyards and fields.
The groups here restore native prairie and oak woodland, bring back the wildflowers and rare butterflies that depend on them, and heal the Willamette River and its floodplain. Theirs is the delicate work of recovering an ecosystem that most people never knew was there.
