The Midlands is where the modern world was invented, and it paid for the privilege. This is the landscape of the Industrial Revolution, of coal and iron and canal, and for two centuries its rivers ran the colours of whatever was being made beside them. It is also, less famously, a country of ancient hedgerow and ridge-and-furrow field, of the old forest of Arden, and of a canal network that has quietly become one of the most important wildlife corridors in Britain.
Post-industrial land turns out to be strange and valuable habitat. Spoil heaps, flooded quarries, abandoned railway cuttings, and the peculiar chemistry of contaminated ground produce conditions that specialist species colonise and thrive in. Some of the richest invertebrate sites in England are old industrial ground that nobody thought to tidy up.
The organizations here restore rivers that were written off as sewers, replant the hedgerows that intensive farming ripped out, and defend green space in cities that were built without much of it. There is a distinctly Midlands character to this work: practical, unsentimental, and rooted in the conviction that a landscape can be repaired.
