The Lowlands are where most Scots live, a belt of fertile country running between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth, hemmed by uplands north and south. It is the industrial heart of the nation, the ground that produced shipbuilding and steel and coal, and it carries the scars and the recoveries that go with that history. The Clyde was one of the most polluted rivers in Europe, and salmon now run in it again.
The two great firths are the ecological anchors. They are estuaries of real importance for wintering waders and wildfowl, and their mudflats and saltmarsh sit directly against the largest concentration of people and industry in Scotland. The Forth in particular has been an industrial waterway for centuries and remains, improbably, a place of significant wildlife.
The organizations here restore the post-industrial rivers, defend and expand the peatlands of the surrounding uplands, and green the cities in a country that has committed itself to some of the most ambitious climate targets in the world. There is a strong policy current in Scottish conservation, and much of it is generated here.
