The southwest peninsula of England reaches into the Atlantic and gets the weather to prove it: mild, wet, and washed by a warm current that lets subtropical plants grow in gardens at a latitude they have no business at. The coast is granite cliff and hidden cove and estuary, and between the two shores rise the granite moors, Dartmoor and Bodmin, high and boggy and littered with the stone remains of people who lived there four thousand years ago.
The seas here are the richest in England. Basking sharks, the second-largest fish on Earth, cruise the summer plankton blooms. Grey seals breed on the outlying rocks. Reefs of pink maerl and forests of kelp grow in the clear water, and puffins and gannets crowd the offshore islands. It is also a coast that has been fished hard for a very long time, and the argument over marine protected areas is a live and sometimes bitter one.
The organizations here push for genuinely protected seas rather than lines on a map, restore seagrass and kelp, and defend the moors and their peat. They also grapple with the peculiar pressure of being extremely beautiful: a tourist economy that both funds conservation and steadily consumes the thing it comes to see.
