The Thames is a modest river by world standards, and it has carried an immodest share of history. It rises in the Cotswolds and runs east through a soft country of chalk downland and clay vale, gathering tributaries, until it widens into the estuary that made London possible. The southeast of England is the most crowded corner of the country, and yet it holds chalk streams found almost nowhere else on Earth, ancient woodland, and heaths that support species clinging on at the edge of their range.
The chalk streams deserve particular attention, because they are genuinely rare and genuinely English. Around eighty-five percent of the world’s chalk streams are in England, most of them here, and they are extraordinary: water filtered through hundreds of feet of chalk, emerging clear and cold and constant, supporting trout and mayfly and water crowfoot. They are also under siege from abstraction, sewage discharge, and agricultural runoff, and their defense has become one of the defining environmental fights in Britain.
The organizations here reflect the density and the age of the place. Some are among the oldest conservation bodies in the world, founded when Victorian naturalists first noticed what industry was doing to the countryside. They protect the remaining green belt against a housing crisis, clean up a river that was declared biologically dead in 1957 and now hosts seals and seahorses, and fight for the chalk streams that are, quietly, a global treasure.
