Severn & the West Country Nature Nonprofits

The Severn is Britain’s longest river, and its estuary has the second-highest tidal range in the world, a rise and fall of some fourteen metres that sends a genuine wave, the Severn bore, surging upstream against the current. The estuary’s vast mudflats, exposed and drowned twice a day, feed enormous numbers of wintering waterbirds, and the whole system is of international importance.

Inland lies a soft, prosperous country: the Cotswold limestone with its honey-coloured villages, the Somerset Levels, which are not really land but a drained wetland held below sea level by pumping, and Bristol, a city that grew rich on Atlantic trade and has spent the modern era reinventing itself as one of the greenest in Britain. The Levels flood, sometimes spectacularly, and the argument over whether to keep pumping or to let water back in is the sharpest land-use question in the region.

The organizations here defend the estuary against successive proposals to barrage it for tidal power, restore the peat and wetland of the Levels, where cranes now breed again after four centuries, and work on the rivers of a farming region where slurry and soil runoff remain stubborn problems.
