Wales is a small country made mostly of hills, and its uplands, Snowdonia in the north, the Cambrian Mountains through the middle, the Brecon Beacons in the south, carry a landscape that looks ancient and is in fact heavily shaped by sheep. Overgrazing has produced what critics call a green desert: hillsides of close-cropped grass where woodland and scrub and the species that need them have been eaten out.
What survives is precious. The Atlantic oakwoods of the western valleys are temperate rainforest, dripping with mosses, lichens, and ferns found almost nowhere else in Britain, and they are a genuinely globally rare habitat. The red kite, reduced to a handful of birds in the Welsh hills and rescued from there, is now one of conservation’s proudest emblems. The coast holds seabird islands and one of Europe’s best populations of Manx shearwater.
The organizations here restore the temperate rainforest, rewet the upland peat, and negotiate with a farming culture that is central to Welsh identity and also, at current intensity, incompatible with recovering the hills. That negotiation is the whole of Welsh conservation.
