Irish Coast & Countryside Nature Nonprofits

Ireland is green because it rains, and it rains because the Atlantic is right there. The result is a country of bog and pasture and a coast of extraordinary drama, cliffs and islands and long inlets facing weather that has crossed three thousand miles of open ocean to arrive. The Burren, a limestone pavement in the west, grows Arctic, Alpine, and Mediterranean plants side by side in its cracks, which should not be possible and is.

The raised bogs and blanket bogs are Ireland’s great and undervalued habitat, and they have been cut for fuel for centuries and stripped industrially for decades. Only a small fraction remains intact. Their loss is a carbon problem and a biodiversity problem at once, and the recent turn toward rewetting them represents a real shift in national thinking.

The organizations here restore the bogs, defend the machair and dunes of the western coast, and press against an agricultural model built on intensive dairy that is putting nitrogen into rivers and estuaries at levels the water cannot absorb. Ireland’s environmental reckoning is arriving late and moving fast.
