The Pennines are called the backbone of England, a long spine of gritstone and limestone running north from the Peak District through the Yorkshire Dales to the Cheviots. It is a landscape of blanket bog and dry-stone wall, of moorland that looks natural and is in fact one of the most heavily managed environments in Britain, burned and drained and grazed for grouse and sheep for two centuries.
The blanket bog is the thing that matters most and is least appreciated. Britain holds a substantial share of the world’s blanket bog, and when it is healthy it is a carbon store of national importance and a sponge that slows floodwater before it reaches the towns below. Drained and burned, it does the opposite: it releases carbon and sends the water downhill fast, which is why the flooding debate and the moorland management debate turned out to be the same debate.
The organizations here rewet the bogs by blocking the drainage channels cut into them, restore the peat, and plant in the cloughs to slow the water. It is unglamorous work with a very clear payoff, and it has made the Pennines an unlikely proving ground for natural flood management.
