The Southeast Coastal Plain was once carpeted by the longleaf pine, a fire-swept forest of grass and widely spaced trees that stretched across ninety million acres and ranked among the most biodiverse ecosystems in North America. Fire was its heartbeat, and where fire was suppressed the forest collapsed. Today only a small fraction survives, yet those remnants shelter red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises, and a floor of wildflowers of stunning richness.
The organizations here bring fire back to the land, restore longleaf pine across the region, and protect the wetlands and rare species woven through it. Theirs is a story of comeback, of an ecosystem being deliberately, painstakingly rebuilt.
