The Chesapeake is the largest estuary in the United States, a sprawling, shallow, brackish sea fed by a watershed reaching into six states. For centuries it was almost unimaginably rich in oysters that once filtered its entire volume in days, in blue crabs and rockfish and waterfowl. Overharvest and runoff diminished it, and the long campaign to bring it back has become one of the defining restoration efforts in the country.
The groups working here rebuild oyster reefs, plant streamside buffers and living shorelines, and hold the vast watershed accountable for what flows downstream. Their work embodies a watershed truth: the health of the bay is written on every acre that drains to it.
