Gulf Coast Nature Nonprofits

The Gulf Coast is a broad, watery margin of marsh, barrier island, and estuary, one of the most productive coastal systems in the world and one of the most imperiled. Its wetlands are a nursery for the fisheries of the entire Gulf and a bulwark against hurricanes, yet Louisiana alone loses a football field of land to the sea roughly every hour. Oil, subsidence, and rising water press on a coast that has given the nation enormous wealth.

The organizations here rebuild marsh and barrier islands, restore the sediment flows that once sustained the delta, and defend coastal communities and fisheries alike. Their work is among the largest ecological restoration efforts on Earth, a fight to keep a coastline from dissolving.
