Mississippi River Delta Nature Nonprofits

The Mississippi River Delta is the great outfall of a continent, where the sediment of half of North America once built land against the sea. For thousands of years the river spread its silt across southern Louisiana, growing marsh and swamp into one of the richest wetland systems on Earth. Levees and channels cut that supply off, and now the delta is drowning, losing land to the Gulf at one of the fastest rates on the planet.

The organizations here work to reconnect the river to its marshes, rebuild wetlands and barrier islands, and defend the birds, fisheries, and communities of a coast that is literally disappearing. Their work is a race against the sea to hold the very land the river once made.
