Inland New England is a landscape of old hills and older farms, where the Connecticut River runs south through a broad valley of tobacco fields and floodplain forest, and the Berkshires rise to the west in worn, wooded folds. This is the New England that is not the coast: quieter, greener, stitched together by stone walls and second-growth woods that have been patiently reclaiming abandoned pasture for a century.
The organizations here protect the river and its floodplain, conserve working farms and forest from development creeping up the valley, and steward the ridgelines and cold streams of the Berkshire hills. Theirs is the long, patient work of a landscape that has already come back once.
