Long Island Sound is an estuary hidden in plain sight, a broad arm of protected water lying between the Connecticut shore and the north coast of Long Island, ringed by some of the most densely settled land in America. For generations it absorbed the runoff of that density without complaint, until it could not, and the recovery of the Sound has become one of the great restoration stories of the Northeast.
The organizations along these shores rebuild oyster and eelgrass beds, protect the tidal marshes that buffer the coast, and hold the watershed accountable for what it sends downstream. They are proving that an estuary at the edge of a megalopolis can be brought back to life.
