Delaware River Basin Nature Nonprofits

The Delaware is the longest undammed river east of the Mississippi, running free from the Catskills to the sea, and it supplies drinking water to millions of people in two of America’s largest cities. Its basin gathers the Poconos, the Piedmont, and the tidal reaches below Philadelphia into one watershed, and the fact that it still runs free is not an accident but the result of decades of deliberate defense.

The organizations here protect the river’s flow and the forests of its headwaters, restore the streams and wetlands of the Philadelphia region, and defend a watershed that quietly sustains an enormous population. Their work is a reminder that a free-flowing river in the middle of the megalopolis is something worth fighting for.
