The Adirondacks are a grand experiment in coexistence a six-million-acre park, larger than several national parks combined, where wilderness and working communities share the same map. Nearly half is constitutionally protected as forever wild, some of the strongest land protection in the nation, while the rest is a patchwork of towns, farms, and private forest. Its peaks, lakes, and rivers form the largest protected area in the contiguous United States.
The organizations here defend the forever-wild forest, protect the lakes and rivers from acid rain and invasive species, and help the people who live inside the park build a future rooted in its health. Their work tests a profound idea: that people and wilderness can thrive side by side.
