Long Island & the Peconic Nature Nonprofits

Long Island is a glacial artifact, a hundred-mile ridge of sand and gravel dropped by the last ice sheet and shaped ever since by the Atlantic. Its eastern reaches split into two forks embracing the Peconic bays, and behind the beaches lie the Pine Barrens, a fire-dependent forest sitting atop the sole-source aquifer that every resident drinks from. Few places tie water, land, and survival together so plainly.

The organizations here defend the aquifer and the Pine Barrens above it, protect the Peconic estuary and its shellfish, and hold the line on the barrier beaches against both development and the rising sea. On an island, there is nowhere else to go, and the conservation here knows it.
