Southern Piedmont Nature Nonprofits

The Piedmont is the long red-clay shoulder of the South, the rolling country that runs between the Blue Ridge and the coastal plain. It is neither mountain nor lowland, and that in-between quality has made it easy to overlook, even as it became the most urbanized landscape in the Southeast. Beneath the pavement of Atlanta and Birmingham lie the headwaters of rivers that supply water to millions.

The organizations here defend those urban headwaters, restore the hardwood forests and river corridors that thread between the subdivisions, and fight for tree canopy and greenspace in cities growing faster than their ecosystems can absorb. This is conservation practiced in the middle of a metropolis, and it is some of the most consequential work in the region.
