The Everglades are like nothing else on Earth a vast, slow sheet of water gliding almost imperceptibly across a bed of sawgrass, the river of grass that Marjory Stoneman Douglas taught the nation to see. This subtropical wetland is a mosaic of marsh, cypress, mangrove, and tree island, home to wading birds by the thousand, to alligator and crocodile, and to the elusive Florida panther. A century of draining and diking brought it to the brink.
The organizations here fight to restore the natural flow of water south through the system, defend the wetlands and their wildlife, and press forward one of the largest ecosystem restoration projects ever attempted. Their work is a long redemption, an effort to let the river of grass flow freely once again.
