The Wasatch Front is where mountains and metropolis stand shoulder to shoulder, a wall of high peaks rising abruptly above the cities strung along its base. The canyons that cleave the range supply the drinking water for most of Utah’s population, and just to the west lies the Great Salt Lake, a hemispherically vital wetland now shrinking to dangerous lows. Few places bind a region’s ecology and its daily life so tightly.
