The Southern Rockies are the high roof of the interior West, a wall of peaks where the air thins and the rivers begin. Snow that falls on these summits becomes the Colorado, the Rio Grande, the Arkansas, and the Platte the water that irrigates farms and fills taps a thousand miles away. Alpine tundra, spruce-fir forest, and shimmering aspen climb these slopes, and the whole system runs on snowpack.
The organizations working here protect the headwaters that the arid West depends on, defend wilderness and roadless country, and restore forests and rivers stressed by drought and warming. In a region where every drop of water is spoken for many times over, this is conservation at the very source.
