The Great Basin is America’s great interior, a cold desert of endless sagebrush valleys and lonely mountain ranges where no river reaches the sea and every drop of water drains inward to disappear. It looks empty to the passing eye, but the sagebrush sea is a rich and threatened ecosystem, home to the greater sage-grouse and to ancient bristlecone pines that are among the oldest living things on the planet.
The organizations here protect the sagebrush sea from fire, invasive cheatgrass, and fragmentation, defend the springs and wetlands scattered like jewels across the desert, and safeguard the wide-open country that pronghorn and sage-grouse need. Their work reveals the hidden richness of a land too easily dismissed as barren.
