Northern Arizona is the Colorado Plateau at its most sublime, a high country of red-rock canyons, the ponderosa forests of the Mogollon Rim, and the vast rim of the Grand Canyon itself. It is a land of dramatic vertical relief and living Native cultures, where the San Francisco Peaks rise sacred above the desert and where the light seems to belong to the rock itself. Water is scarce and precious, and the landscape is shaped by its absence.
