The Garonne rises in the Pyrenees and runs northeast through Toulouse before turning for the Atlantic, and the country it crosses is the old Occitan south: a warm, dry, brick-red landscape of sunflower and vine and small hill towns, with the Canal du Midi cutting across it in a straight line of plane trees, an engineering marvel three and a half centuries old.
The Garonne is one of the last French rivers where migratory fish still attempt the journey, sturgeon, shad, lamprey, and salmon pushing upstream against a series of dams that most of them do not pass. The plane trees of the canal, meanwhile, are being killed by a fungal canker and are being felled by the tens of thousands, changing a landscape that had come to seem permanent.
The organizations here work on fish passage and river flows in a basin where irrigation demand and summer drought increasingly collide, defend the wetlands and floodplain forest, and confront a region that is drying and warming faster than most of France.
