The Pyrenees are a wall. They run unbroken for four hundred kilometres between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and for most of history they have separated Iberia from the rest of Europe more effectively than any border. The passes are few and high, and the valleys on either side developed their own languages, laws, and grazing customs, some of which are still in force.
Ecologically the range is a meeting point and a refuge. Atlantic weather in the west gives beech and fir; Mediterranean conditions in the east give pine and scrub; and the high country in between holds relict populations of species stranded here since the ice retreated. The Pyrenean desman, a bizarre aquatic mole found nowhere else, lives in these cold streams. The brown bear was reduced to a handful of animals and is being reintroduced, to the considerable annoyance of some shepherds.
The organizations here work across a national border on a single mountain range, protecting the high pastures and the transhumance that maintains them, restoring the bear and the bearded vulture, and defending rivers that are heavily targeted for hydropower.
