The Normandy coast is chalk cliff and long beach and, at its western end, one of the great tidal theatres of the world. The bay of Mont-Saint-Michel has a tidal range of more than fourteen metres, and the sea comes across the sand flats fast enough to have drowned the unwary for centuries. The mudflats and saltmarsh feed enormous numbers of waders and wildfowl, and the whole bay is of international importance.
Inland lies the bocage, a landscape of small fields enclosed by thick hedgerows on earth banks, which is both an ecological asset of real value and, in June of 1944, a military nightmare. The hedges hold birds, insects, and small mammals, and slow the water on its way to the rivers. Agricultural consolidation has been steadily removing them.
The organizations here defend the bay and its tidal flats, work to keep and replant the bocage hedgerows, and address the runoff from an intensively farmed hinterland that reaches the sea and, along this coast as in Brittany, feeds the green algal tides.
