Belgium and its neighbours compress an improbable amount of landscape into very little space: the sandy Flanders plain running to the North Sea, the fertile loam belt through the middle, and then the ground rising south into the Ardennes, a plateau of deep forest and steep river valleys cut by the Meuse and its tributaries. It is old, worked country, and it is among the most fragmented in Europe.
Fragmentation is the defining ecological fact here. Roads, rail, canals, and settlement have carved this landscape into pieces small enough that wildlife struggles to move between them, and the fix, ecological corridors and wildlife crossings, has become something of a Belgian and Dutch specialty. The Ardennes forest itself remains substantial enough to hold wild boar, red deer, and returning lynx and wolf, animals that are recolonising western Europe on their own initiative.
The organizations here rebuild connectivity between habitat islands, restore the Meuse and Scheldt and their floodplains, and defend the coastal dunes and polders against both the sea and development. They work at the crowded heart of Europe, which makes their successes unusually instructive.
