The Pearl River Delta is the most intensely urbanised place on the planet. In forty years, a landscape of rice paddy, fishpond, and mangrove became a megacity of some seventy million people, running continuously from Guangzhou through Shenzhen to Hong Kong and Macau. It is the workshop of the world, and it was built directly on top of a wetland.
What survives is therefore all the more remarkable. Mai Po and the Deep Bay wetlands on the Hong Kong border remain a critical staging post for migratory shorebirds on the East Asian flyway, a stretch of mudflat and mangrove and traditional shrimp pond squeezed between two of the densest cities on Earth. Chinese white dolphins still swim in the estuary, though their numbers are falling as the water is dredged and bridged and reclaimed.
The organizations here defend the last wetlands against a development machine of extraordinary force, protect the country parks that cover a surprising majority of Hong Kong’s land area, and press for air and water quality in a region where the environmental cost of manufacturing is paid locally and immediately.
