Taiwan is a mountain island. It rises from the sea to nearly four thousand metres in a very short horizontal distance, and that compression stacks tropical, temperate, and alpine zones on top of one another within a single day’s climb. The result is remarkable endemism for an island of its size, including the Formosan black bear and a landscape of cypress and hemlock forest wrapped almost permanently in cloud.
The island sits in the typhoon track and on an active fault, and the mountains are steep and young and prone to catastrophic landslides. That instability shapes everything: the rivers run short and fierce, the sediment loads are among the highest in the world, and the ecosystems are adapted to violent disturbance.
The organizations here protect the montane forests and the endemic species within them, defend the western tidal flats where the Chinese white dolphin population is critically small, and work on a densely populated island where land is scarce and every hectare is contested.
