The Korean peninsula is mountainous, densely populated, and cut across the middle by the strangest nature reserve in the world. The Demilitarized Zone, four kilometres wide and two hundred and fifty long, has been almost entirely free of human presence since 1953, and in that accidental sanctuary live cranes, Asiatic black bears, musk deer, and possibly leopards, species pushed out of everywhere else on the peninsula.
Along the west coast lie the tidal flats of the Yellow Sea, one of the most important stopover sites on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, where migratory shorebirds flying from Australia to the Arctic must refuel or die. Vast areas of these flats have been reclaimed for industry and agriculture, and the shorebird populations that depend on them are in freefall. What happens on this mud determines the fate of birds on the other side of the world.
The organizations here fight to protect the remaining tidal flats, restore mountain forest and the rivers below, and think carefully about the DMZ, which will one day cease to be a frontier and which conservationists hope can become something other than a development opportunity.
