The Swiss Alps are the most studied mountains on Earth, and for good reason: they are where alpine science began, where glaciers were first understood to have advanced and retreated, and where a century and a half of measurement has produced a climate record of unmatched precision. The Aletsch, the largest glacier in the Alps, is a river of ice more than twenty kilometres long, and it is shrinking visibly, year over year.
Switzerland also invented the modern relationship between mountains and money. The valleys are threaded with rail and cable and tunnel, and the ski industry has shaped settlement and economy for generations. That industry is now watching its snowline climb and is responding, in places, by wrapping glaciers in blankets, which is either an act of devotion or a confession, depending on how you look at it.
The organizations here monitor and publicise the retreat of the ice, defend the remaining unspoiled valleys against further infrastructure, and manage the return of large carnivores to a country of intensively grazed alpine pasture. Swiss conservation carries unusual weight because the data is so good and so long.
