The Danube is Europe’s river, passing through more countries than any other river on Earth, gathering water from the Alps and the Carpathians and the Balkans and carrying it two thousand eight hundred kilometres to the Black Sea. Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade all sit on it. It has been a border, a trade route, and a political fact for as long as there has been European history.
At its end lies the Danube Delta, the largest and best-preserved delta in Europe, a labyrinth of channel and reed bed and floating island that holds the greatest reed expanse in the world and pelicans in numbers found nowhere else on the continent. Upstream, the river has been dammed and channelised heavily, and the sturgeon that once ran up it from the Black Sea to spawn have been cut off from their spawning grounds and are now among the most endangered fish in the world.
The organizations here work across a dozen jurisdictions on one river, restoring floodplains, fighting for sturgeon passage and against poaching, and defending the delta from dredging and development.
