The North German Plain is glacial leftovers, a low, sandy, lake-scattered country stretching from the Netherlands across northern Germany and Poland to the Baltic states, shaped by ice sheets that ground everything flat and dropped their debris on the way out. The Baltic itself is one of the strangest seas on Earth: nearly enclosed, barely salty, slow to flush, and consequently extremely vulnerable to everything that drains into it.
Because the Baltic exchanges water with the North Sea so sluggishly, the nutrients that run off farms across nine countries stay in it, feeding algal blooms that strip the oxygen from the bottom and leave dead zones covering vast areas of seabed. It is one of the most eutrophied seas in the world, and fixing it requires the cooperation of every nation on its shore.
The organizations here restore the peat bogs that were drained for agriculture and are now leaking carbon, protect the coastal lagoons and dunes, and press the whole Baltic catchment to send less nitrogen downstream. Along the old Iron Curtain, an accidental wilderness that grew up in the death strip is now being deliberately preserved as a green corridor running the length of Europe.
