The Rhine is the working river of Europe, the busiest waterway on the continent, carrying freight from Rotterdam to Basel through the industrial heart of Germany. It is also, in its middle reaches, one of the most romantic landscapes in Europe, a gorge of terraced vineyards and castles that has been painted and sung about for two centuries. Both things are true at once, and the tension between them is the story of this river.
In 1986 a chemical warehouse fire at Basel sent tonnes of pesticide into the water and killed the river for hundreds of kilometres. The catastrophe was so total that it produced something rare: genuine, binding international cooperation. The Rhine Action Programme brought the salmon back to a river that had none, and the recovery is one of the most cited restoration successes in the world.
The organizations here keep that recovery going, reconnecting floodplains that were cut off when the river was straightened, restoring fish passage past the barrages, and defending the remaining alluvial forest. They also confront a newer problem: in drought years the Rhine now runs too low for the barges, which concentrates every pollutant that remains.
