Mojave Desert Nature Nonprofits

The Mojave is the desert of extremes, a high, stark land of Joshua tree forests and sun-scoured basins that holds both the hottest place in North America and a strange, fragile beauty. Its plants and animals the Joshua tree, the desert tortoise, the bighorn are exquisitely adapted to heat and drought, and its slow rhythms mean that damage here can take centuries to heal. The desert asks for patience, and it does not forgive haste.

The organizations here protect the tortoise and the Joshua tree woodlands, defend intact desert from the industrial footprint of sprawling development, and safeguard the springs and washes that are oases of life. Their work insists that the desert is not empty space to be filled, but a living landscape worth keeping whole.
