The Chihuahuan Desert is the largest desert in North America, a high desert of grassland and shrub straddling the border and reaching its northern flourish around Big Bend, where the Rio Grande carves deep canyons through the wild country. Higher and wetter than the deserts to its west, it supports sweeping desert grasslands, isolated sky-island mountains, and desert springs that hold rare fish surviving from a wetter age.
The organizations here protect the desert grasslands and the sky islands that rise from them, defend the springs and the Rio Grande, and work across the border to conserve a landscape that belongs to two nations. Their work safeguards the vast, subtle richness of a desert most people never truly see.
