Before Dallas and Fort Worth, there was the Blackland Prairie, a belt of deep, dark, fertile soil that grew tallgrass taller than a person, bordered by the Cross Timbers, a rough band of post oak and blackjack that early travelers found nearly impassable. The prairie was so good for farming that almost none of it survives, less than one percent, making it one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America.
The organizations here protect the last prairie remnants, restore native grassland inside a fast-growing metroplex, and defend the woodlands and streams of the Cross Timbers. They are salvaging the final fragments of a landscape that has nearly vanished.
