The Rio Grande is a lifeline drawn across the desert, and the valley it waters is a ribbon of green through arid country, from the cottonwood bosques of New Mexico to the subtropical thornforest of the river’s southern reach. The lower valley, where the river nears the Gulf, is a meeting of temperate and tropical a place where birds and butterflies found nowhere else in the country draw naturalists from around the world.
The organizations here restore the bosque and the river’s flow, protect the last fragments of native thornforest and the rare wildlife within them, and work across the border on a river that belongs to two nations. Their work defends a green thread of life in a landscape defined by thirst.
