The southwest corner of Australia has been an island in practice for millions of years, cut off from the rest of the continent by desert, and its plants have been evolving in isolation on some of the oldest, poorest soils on Earth. The result is one of the planet’s great biodiversity hotspots: thousands of plant species found nowhere else, wildflower displays that draw people from around the world, and forests of jarrah, karri, and tingle, eucalypts that grow to enormous size.
The threats are unusual and severe. A soil-borne pathogen, Phytophthora dieback, moves through the bush killing susceptible plants outright and cannot be eradicated, only contained by hygiene and quarantine. The climate is drying markedly, the rainfall having stepped down decades ago and never returned. Feral cats and foxes have taken a terrible toll on the small marsupials.
The organizations here fight dieback, run predator control and translocation programmes for numbats and woylies and quokkas, and defend the old-growth karri and tingle. This is a bioregion whose sheer botanical wealth is out of all proportion to how much of the world has heard of it.
