New Zealand spent eighty million years as a world without land mammals, and evolution took full advantage. Birds filled every role: browsing, grazing, hunting, scavenging. Many gave up flight because there was nothing to fly from. Then people arrived, and with them rats, stoats, possums, and cats, and the birds that had never needed to be afraid discovered, catastrophically, that they should have been.
The North Island holds the volcanic plateau, the geothermal country of geyser and boiling mud, the great kauri forests of the north where individual trees are older than most nations, and a coastline of extraordinary marine life. The kiwi, the kokako, the kakapo: these are the survivors of that old world, and every one of them persists only because someone is actively killing the things that eat them.
The organizations here run predator control at a scale attempted nowhere else on Earth, a national ambition to eliminate introduced predators entirely. They build fenced sanctuaries, restore island refuges, and fight kauri dieback, a disease killing the giants. New Zealand conservation is unusually pragmatic and unusually determined, because the alternative is watching.
